Douglas County Non Profit Campus - Roseburg, Oregon

The Ford Foundation, the primary supporter of the Douglas County Non Profit Campus, desired to create a model non-profit campus that would provide a centralized location for a complex of social service organizations. By providing a centralized location for such services, the organizations can benefit from shared amenities and increased networking opportunities.

The design of the site follows a traditional campus layout including a centralized quad, grand lawn, a primary axis guiding campus order, lush plantings, prioritized pedestrian circulation through the campus, and vehicular circulation and parking constrained to the periphery of the site. This configuration creates an open atmosphere for learning, relaxing and group gatherings. Sensitive environmental issues were also incorporated into the overall design through the enhancement of the existing wetland as well as through the provision of stormwater swales designed to treat runoff from the buildings, roads and parking lot surfaces.

The main bio-swale is a central feature on the site as it snakes its way through the campus quad. This swale is both an educational element that informs people about stormwater issues in relation to the surrounding wetlands and an inviting place for peaceful relaxation.
