Mercy Medical Center
Symbols of loss, remembrance, and unity converge to create the Mercy Medical Center 9.11.2001 Memorial Plaza. Combined, the elements offer a place of peaceful reflection and perhaps even inspiration of courage and hope. Upon arriving at the memorial, the visitor is greeted by a black granite clad monument. A reflecting pool situated along a short axis across the plaza accompanies the monument. The New York skyline is recalled though these elements and memorializes what was once there, and what no longer stands. A missing corner from the monument and the void created by the reflecting pool symbolize the great loss experienced from the tragedy. A flag stands tall, punctuating the intersection of where the missing corner of the monument would have stood. The flag provides an element that joins all who visit in the remembrance of an American experience. Reflections in polished granite and water engage the body, mind and spirit of the visitor. Within the memorial, the circular plaza represents the people of our country and envelops the visitor. A small amphitheater provides a place for sitting and gathering and a curved memorial wall, engraved with the names of those lost in the tragedy, completes the circle acknowledging that those who are gone are forever a part of our memories.
