Pioneer Park - Canyonville

Pioneer Park is located in the heart of Canyonville, Oregon and borders a tributary of the South Umpqua River overlooking the majestic Canyon Mountain. The park is a predominant community center and is used year round for numerous activities ranging from logging competitions and the annual "Chili Fest" to casual gatherings and scheduled performances.

The new master plan for the park includes a new band stand and the relocation of a new concession stand, improved pedestrian circulation, a new entry experience, secured play areas for kids and ball games, picnic areas and a natural gathering place.

The design concept for the park master plan evolved from the historical references to the Native American population, which inhabited the area as well as from the City of Canyonville's role as a trading post on the Applegate Trail. The primary form for the park is the circle, which repeats itself for the length of the site recalling a strand of trading beads. The circles also symbolize and encourage community and gathering opportunities by creating various gathering spaces along with the main amphitheater. A sinuous boardwalk along the water's edge invites a "hide and reveal" experience and contributes to the narrative of the site.
